Under 8's
Sunday 21st October
Wharfedale U8's continued their encouraging start to the season with a 19-strong squad who travelled to Harrogate last Sunday. A number of matches were played, and both squads were very evenly matched.
Harrogate U8's 35 vs 25 Wharfedale U8's
In the first game both sides started well, Wharfedale opening the scoring through Charlie Lawn, and Harrogate scoring two tries in quick succession. Wharfedale responded with two tries from Daniel Bannier showing strong running on the left side of the pitch. Harrogate levelled the score at 15-15 just before half time.
Wharfedale started the second half with a good run from his own half by Alex Bellamy who touched down in the right hand corner to put Wharfedale ahead. After a period of sustained pressure Harrogate 's attack proved too much for Wharfedale's defensive line, with Harrogate running in four more tries. Wharfedale managed to cross the line one more time with Jim Mallalieu-Black evading a number of tackles before scoring, but it was not enough to win the match.
Harrogate U8's 30 vs 40 Wharfedale U8's
In the second game Wharfedale played better attacking rugby. It was Ruairi Coyle who ran in the first try in the opening minute with a typically strong run, followed by Rory Macnab. In a very open game there was good running and support play for both sides. Harrogate levelled the score before Wharfedale edged ahead with tries from Oliver Bullock and another from Ruairi Coyle. Harrogate ran in two more tries to level the score at half time.
In the second half, Wharfedale were always ahead, the first try from Rory Macnab. The second came from man of the match Oliver Bullock who ran the ball from his own half and beat five Harrogate defenders with a number of carefully crafted side-steps before scoring a great try. Ruairi Coyle scored again for a well deserved hat-trick of tries, and Jim Mallalieu-Black sealed victory for Wharfedale with the final score of the match.
Wharfedale RUFC U8 Win at Baildon Festival
28th October 2007
Last Sunday saw Wharfedale's U8 Squad run out as victors in a very closely contested Baildon Festival.
Five local teams competed against each other in a league with 3 points awarded for win, 2 for a draw, and 1 for a defeat. Ultimately only 4 points separated the teams.
In their first match Wharfedale met local rivals Skipton in their second meeting of the season, with Wharfedale maintaining the upper hand winning 40-25.
The second match was very different with the Greens losing to a well drilled, physical Keighley team who were able to recycle the ball quickly to good effect, the final score 20-15 to Keighley.
Wharfedale's final two matches were against Baildon Bisons, and Baildon Buffalos. Against Baildon Bisons, Wharfedale's strong running and improved defensive play ensured the Greens won 40-10.
The final match against Baildon Buffalos was critical as both sides knew that victory would put them in good overall position. Wharfedale had the half time advantage, leading 20-15. In the second half Baildon came back strongly scoring two tries. A much improved defensive display by Wharfedale kept Baildon on the back foot for much of the half, and a couple of turnover balls proved vital in giving Wharfedale possession from which to add to their score. A strong run from Baildon in the last minute of the game led to the final score of the match, but it was not enough to prevent Wharfedale winning 40-30.
Wharfedale's record was: P4, W3, L1, F 135, A 85, 10 Points. 1 st Place
Wharfedale squad: Fraser Adamson, Daniel Benn, Alex Bellamy, Daniel Benn, Oliver Bullock, Ruairi Coyle, Charlie Lawn, Rory Macnab, Jim Mallalieu-Black, Douggie Smith.
