Wharfedale U12's v Waterloo FC 26/4/08

The under 12's welcomed Touring Side Waterloo to the Avenue on Saturday for a match before the 1 st Teams game against Halifax. Waterloo Football Club is based in Blundellsands, a suburb of Liverpool and was founded in 1882.

Waterloo made the better start going two converted tries into the lead before the Green's woke up! Great periods of defence from both teams kept the match moving with Taylor Prell eventually jinking through to score the first Wharfedale try and converting. Waterloo immediately fought back with a length of the pitch move and duly converted to remain to scores ahead. Under pressure the greens fought back during the final quarter with Matthew Price crossing the line twice, the first from a charge down and collect and the second from some slick passing through the backs, Taylor Prell converting both to tie the scores on 21 a piece in a evenly contested match. Waterloo were to continue the Tour via Kirkby Lonsdale and Fleetwood.

Under 12's North East Tour 2008

The Wharfedale under 12's squad travelled to the North East on their first tour last weekend. Games were played at our host's Morpeth, Percy Park & Tynedale.

The first match of the Tour was played on Friday evening immediately on arriving in the North East at Morpeth Rugby Club. Whilst the greens put in a spirited performance they were outshone by some fantastic examples of genetic engineering creating an enormous pack and fast backs the final score of 30 – 0 did not reflect the effort put in by the team.

Percy Park on Saturday were up next and from the “bar talk” after the Morpeth game we were told Percy Park were even bigger ! hence the tour catchphrase “what do you feed them up here?” Learning from our previous experience this was a completely different approach and the green's took the game to Percy Park with William Coates first on the score sheet, converted by Adam Chown. Interesting application of the advantage rule led to Percy Parks scoring in the corner. Tom Willets then wrestled the advantage back in Wharfedale's direction with a strong run and touch down, converted by Taylor Prell. Percy Park were not to be outdone and just before half time scored again to level things up at 14 - 14.

Green Players were now really starting to put in tour performances with some great tackles coming from William Peryer, Sam Lockwood and John Stephenson. The Big tour performance though came from Josh Brewer who was constantly to be found wripping the ball out of Maul's and then charging and driving through the middle of some huge defenders.

The second half started with some great pressure from the Green's and an end to end move from Matthew Price and well timed pass put Taylor Prell over to score, Adam Chown converting. 14 -21, The Greens were now really in the mood and relishing the contest, Taylor scoring from some great support from the forwards and backs, Taylor converted 14 – 28, Matthew Price extended the lead after Max Mallileau Black again appeared out of a maul with the ball. 14 – 35. Percy Park then started a remarkable comeback scoring 2 unanswered tries to draw the scores closer, but the Wharfedale were able to defend the lead to win at the final whistle 28 – 35 and complete a fine performance against some very talented (read huge) players.

The rest of the day was spent relaxing with a visit to the water slide park and the beach and rounded off with the tour dinner.

The Sunday was spent at the Tynedale seven a side tournament and two teams were fielded in the competition. Opponents included Carlisle, Percy Park, Seghill, Aspatria, Perith, Alnwick, Darlington, Tynedale and Ponteyland to give a total of 10 different rugby teams faced over the course of the weekend. A mixture of wins and losses throughout the day ended with the B team in the plate Semi final against Penrith, some great passing from the backs and ferocious tackling was not sufficient to convince the score sheet or the referee of the merit's of a Green win but we did get very very close !

A great tour was enjoyed by all and the Lads proved a credit to parents, coaches and club alike. Given the opportunity the Lad's would love to do this every weekend ! Roll on the next tour…….

Wharfedale Under 12's v. Ripon 13/4/08

Wharfedale under 12's returned to form with a fine performance against Ripon at the Avenue at the weekend in a game of 4 quarters.

Jake Parkinson was first on the scoreboard with a try in the corner, a quick reply to even up the scores and both conversions missed.  Tim bailey on the wing was next to score for the greens and Taylor Prell converted.  Adam Chown carried on the good work with another score in the corner and converted himself, Score at the end of the 1st quarter 19 - 5

2nd Quarter so the return of William Coates scoring after a great backs move from one side of the pitch to the other and back with some great slick passing throughout the backs, Tim Bailey converted, Sam Lockwood finished the half and Tom Willetts converted, half time score 33 - 5

The Greens were now oozing confidence with some well timed passes drawing the tackler before realising ball to great effect, both Taylor Prell and Sam benefitting with scores.  Ripon then staged something of a revivial with some great attacking play and some fantastic defence from the greens in particular Jon Stephenson who's tackling was immense time and time again, Ripon had the honours of the final try and conversion.  Full Time Score 45 - 12.

Wharfedale Under 12's v. West Park 30/3/08

Thanks to the 14 lads (and their parents) who were abe to make it to West Park for Sunday's match which was quite an epic! After the washout we had on Saturday, I think we were all convinced (and hoping) that the match would be cancelled.  How wrong we were!  The weather at West park was perfect and we played on a well drained 2nd team pitch in great condition.

The final score of 45-15 in favour of West Park didn't reflect the quality of play and effort put in by a strong Wharfedale team.  The match was played in 4 quarters of around 15-20 minutes each at the end of which the lads were absolutely shattered!  West Park's squad of around 18 meant that they had fresh legs at each break while we gradually tired.  The first 2 quarters saw some outstanding rugby from Wharfedale with us finishing the 1st quarter 10-5 ahead.  We saw some fantastic attacking "forwards" rugby with great rucking and re-cycling of the ball close to the try line and some equally impressive defending in the 3rd quarter when it seemed that the ball was never more than 5 metres from them scoring a try.  Time after time, we prevented West Park from scoring by driving them back from the line, but eventually tiredness took it's toll and the West Park tries began to build up.

Some outstanding play from the whole team with man of the match this week going to Jake Parkinson playing at scrum half.

See you all again next week for more preparation for the North East tour in a couple of weeks.

Nick

Wharfedale Under 12's v. Huddersfield 16/3/08

Facing a big Huddersfield pack and very well drilled squad and with the Green's a couple of regular players missing the Green machine played well as a team showing some good signs of defence. Huddersfield battered the Wharfedale defence but were repelled again and again until eventually the strong Huddersfield running paid off with two quick tries. Not to be outdone the greens attacked, Josh Brewer scoring, conversion by Adam Chown.  Huddersfield then found the try line again to finish the first half leading 21 points to 7.

Further great Green defence and some great tackling throughout from many players and in particular Sam Lockward.

2nd half replicated the first with Huddersfield scoring 2 further tries before Wharfedale had the last say with Matthew Price scoring a well deserved try and Chown converting, Final Score 14 - 35 to Huddersfield.

Wharfedale Under 12's @ West Park Bramhope Festival 9/3/08

West Park have the makings of a fantastic new facility with the massive new Club House nearing completion, some good looking new pitches and a full astroturf rugby pitch.  Lottery money and a close association with Leeds Carnegie looking to provide a first class facility for West Park RUFC.

Wetherby v Wharfedale

A big Wetherby pack proved too strong for the Greens with the only score of the half, 5 - 0 at half time.

Taylor Prell was first on the scoreboard for the Green's to even things up after the break before Wetherby's own Hairbear went on to score, final Score 15 - 5 to Wetherby.

Ilkley v Wharfedale

A very evenly contested match with some great defensive efforts from both teams, Adam Chown the only try scorer for the Greens, Final Score 5 - 0 to Wharfedale.

Wharfedale v Leodensians

Taylor Prell again first out of the blocks to score for Wharfedale following good pressure from a scrum on own line resulting in turnover ball.  A quick tap penalty and resulting try from Leos evened up the first half. 5 - 5.

The 2nd half was again all about stoic defence from both teams, eventually a focussed Raphael scoring for Leos to clinch the match.

Wharfedale Under 12's v. Skipton 13/1/08

The first half of the match against Skipton at the Avenue started with a try and Conversion from William Wildman at Fullback (7 - 0) shortly followed by Taylor Prell scoring after John Stephenson set up the ball with some brave tackling, conversion William Wildman 14 - 0.  Great work from the forwards resulted in Max Mallilue-Black scoring conversation by Wildman, 21 - 0.  A great run by Sam Lockwood paid off for the Greens when his pass found Matthew Colgrave to score and again converted by Wildman, 28 - 0 at half time.

Second half started with a converted try for Skipton scored by Will Pennett.  28 - 7.  Further excellent work from the Wharfedale forwards put Taylor Prell over for his second try converted by Tim Willet. 35 - 7  The strength of the forwards again proved instrumental in the final try of the match scored by John Stephenson, no conversion Final Score 40 - 7

Skipton defended stoically but failed to hold a rampant Wharfedale side who supplied a good forwards display with excellent 2nd and 3rd phase possession.

Wensleydale v Wharfedale Under 12's 7/1/08

Due to the Xmas break and cancelled games this was the first match for 6 weeks for Wharfedale. the weather at this end of the Dales at Cawkill Park did not disappoint with blue sunny skies and a cold wind prevailling.

The first few exchanges showed some rust but Wharfedale were first to show some post xmas form with Jake Parkinson jinking over for the first try and conversion, 0-7. Will Coates then showed his normal head down full steam approach for the second try and he narrowly missed the conversion off the cross bar, 0-12.  Taylor Prell was the next Wharfedale player to show some pace foregoing the overlap and powering through to score under the posts, Tim Bailey converting, 0-19.  Tim Bailey then showed some impressive pace hitting the ball at speed and traversing the pitch to score in the corner and duly converting himself, 0-26 at half time.

Wensleydale's half time team talk woke them from the holiday mood and they came out in the second half full of promise scoring the first try of the 2nd half and converting, 7-26.  Wensleydale continued to play some good rugby containing the Wharfedale attacking options until Taylor Prell again managed to power through the defence leaving William Wildman to convert, Final Score 7-33.  Points to note were some great Wharfedale scrummaging and good competition for the ball in rucks & mauls.

Next match Skipton Away 13/1/08.

Wharfedale Under 12's v Pendle Pheonix 18/11/07

A few positional changes for Wharfedale showed some potential, Taylor Prell moving to Hooker and William Wildman to Full Back for this match.

Wharfedale opened the score in the first half with a good try and conversation from Adam Chown, Pendle immediately replied with a try of there own from the tallest player on the pitch which was duly converted to tie the scores at 7 - 7.  A Good rugby from both sides continued with a good run from the backs culminating in Tom Willets going over to score again converted by Chown, 14 - 7 at Half Time.

Pendle made better use of the half time talk and came out for the second half with a flying attack to score in the corner again converted to level the scores at 14 -14.  The Green's shaken by this latest attack sprung into action with a great forward drive for the line, Max Mallalieu-Black emerging from the bottom of the pile triumphantly clutching the ball, Chown with the conversation 21 - 14.  Will Coates carried off the prize for the best match face with his strong direct running onto the Pendle defence eventually paying off with the final try of the match converted by Chown.  Final Score 28 - 14 to the Green Machine, Man of the Match Taylor Prell.

Yorkshire Cup Tournament 4/11/07

Held at Bradford & Bingley RUFC

Wharfedale under 12's had six games, 3 draws, 1 win and 2 losses.

Game 1 v Cleckheaton

Wharfedale started the first game with good possession through multiple phases of play from good forward work complimented by slick passing through the backs creating flowing rugby only stopped by great Cleckheaton defence.  no score at halftime.  The second half was more of the same with frantic, fast and furious play by both teams and great defence, Jake Parkinson showing some great skills with some good pick ups and catches under pressure, Final score 0 - 0.

Game 2 v Bradford & Bingley

Wharfedale started well with some good attacking work from defence with a crossfield kick from the kick off collected by Taylor Prell and passing down the line for Matthew Price to score, converted by Adam Chown. Further good work from John Stephenson at full back with an excellent catch and kick took the game to half time. 0 - 7 to the greens.  Further pressure in the second half from the Bees brought rewards as the Bees No. 13 scored and converted his own try, Final score 7 - 7.

Game 3 v Skipton

Skipton were first out of the blocks with some excellent pressure only matched by great green defence resulting in stalemate and 0 - 0 at half time.  Further good green defence prevented Skipton's good work turning inot points and when Taylor Prell got half a chance he was over for the only try of the game, converted by Adam Chown, Final Score 0 - 7 to Wharfedale.

Game 4 v Ilkley

Slightly scrappy start from the greens with passes going astray early in the game was then converted into points with multiple phases taking the greens well into the Ilkley half and silky passing from forwards through the backs out to William Wildman on the wing resulted in a try in the corner, converted by Adam Chown, Half time score 7 - 0 to the green machine.  The second half went Ilkley's way to bring the scores level, 7 - 7 Final Score.

Game 5 v Old Brodleians

A game of missed tackles and missed chances with Old Brods coming out on top with a converted try in each half, Final Score 14 - 0 to Old Brodleians

Game 6 v Huddersfield

A game too far for the Greens, some excellent tackling and without any heads dropping but the well drilled Huddersfield side were too much for Wharfedale going down 5 tries to none.

A good display from the greens with mixed results but both Backs & Forwards should be proud of a great days rugby with everyone involved putting in a performance.

Skipton 30/9/2007

The glorious weather was matched by some of our rugby! A final score of 49-0 (4 tries to Taylor Prell, 1 each for William Coates, Matthew Price and Tom Willets and 4 conversions for Adam Chown and 3 for William Coates) did not flatter us and more clinical finishing, overlaps are our blindspot sometimes, could have seen an even more comprehensive victory.

We put together some excellent phases of play and our passing and running was better than the coaches have seen before; at times we were playing "proper" rugby. There are areas we can improve on and we'll work on these next time we are training but for the time being well done to the whole team.

Player of the week was Taylor Prell whose strong running and support play was excellent.

Special mentions must aslo go to Tim Bailey and William Wildman who really got stuck in as forwards, Matthew Price who had an excellent game at centre, Charlie's Slater and Rennison who both caught towering "up and unders" at fullback and ran them back sensibly towards support and Sam Lockward and William Peryer both tackled like players twice their size!

Next week we are at home against Wensleydale, however, they struggled to raise a team last year so we may be training.
